Phuket on a Budget — 7 Days Without Breaking the Bank

Seven days in Phuket spending smart — free beaches, scooter days, street food, and still hitting the Phi Phi Islands.

Day 1 — Arrive & Patong on Foot

Budget accommodation is plentiful in Patong — guesthouses and hostels start from 400 THB a night. The beach is free, the street food is outstanding, and a Chang beer from a 7-Eleven costs 55 THB. Skip the tourist restaurants and eat at the night market stalls on Rat-U-Thit Road — pad see ew and mango sticky rice for under 150 THB.

Day 2 — Scooter Day: Kata, Karon & the Viewpoint

Rent a scooter (300–400 THB/day) and ride south. Kata Beach for the morning swim, lunch from a beach vendor or local restaurant in the village (150–200 THB), afternoon at wider and quieter Karon Beach, then up to Karon Viewpoint for the sunset — three bays visible at once, zero cost, one of Phuket's best moments.

Day 3 — Phuket Old Town (Almost Free)

Old Town is mostly free — the streets, the architecture, the temples. Start with a 40 THB kopi coffee and kaya toast at a Hokkien coffee shop on Dibuk Road. Walk Thalang and Phang Nga roads, visit Jui Tui Shrine, and explore the alleyways. If it's a Sunday evening, the Walking Street market is one of the best free evenings in Phuket.

Day 4 — Coral Island by Longtail

Skip the expensive tour packages. Take a songthaew south to Rawai Pier (40 THB) and negotiate a longtail boat to Ko Hae (Coral Island) directly — around 300 THB each way. The beach, the snorkeling, and the fish barbecue from a beach shack are all the same as the tour version, at a fraction of the price. Negotiate your return time before you leave.

Day 5 — Phi Phi Islands (Budget Ferry)

The Phi Phi Islands are worth the splurge even on a budget trip — but take the slow ferry (200–350 THB each way) rather than a speedboat tour. The ferry is slower but dramatically cheaper. Buy a snorkel set from a dive shop in Patong the day before (500 THB, keep it for the trip) and you can skip the gear rental on the island.

Day 6 — North Phuket: Bang Tao & Nai Thon

The north of the island is quieter, less commercial, and much cheaper for food. Bang Tao Beach is long and lovely. Nai Thon Beach, 15 minutes further north, is often almost empty. Pack a picnic from a local market (fresh fruit, satay skewers, sticky rice — under 100 THB) and spend a day doing nothing in a beautiful place.

Day 7 — Big Buddha, Rawai & Departure

Big Buddha is free to visit — the 45-metre marble statue is one of Phuket's most impressive sights, and the views from the hill are remarkable. Then down to Rawai for a final fresh seafood lunch at the pier (point and choose, grilled on the spot). Head to the airport from the south — allow 50 minutes to the terminal.
