Overview

Patong Beach is Phuket’s most iconic strip of sand — nearly 3km of wide, golden beach facing the Andaman Sea. It attracts more visitors than any other beach on the island and earns that reputation: the water is warm and swimmable, the infrastructure is excellent, and there is genuinely nothing you can’t find here.

The beach is backed by Thaweewong Road, which runs parallel to the shore and is lined with restaurants, massage parlours, souvenir shops, and beach gear rentals. Behind it, the streets of Patong town fan out with hotels, bars, and markets at every price point.

Swimming & Water Activities

The sea at Patong is generally calm and clear during the high season (November–April). Lifeguards are on duty, and red or yellow flags signal sea conditions. Water visibility is good for snorkeling close to the rocky headlands at either end of the bay.

Watersports operators set up directly on the beach: jet skis, banana boats, parasailing, flyboards, and paddleboards. Prices are negotiable but compare before committing.

Nightlife

Bangla Road — the pedestrianised street running perpendicular to the beach — transforms at night into Phuket’s entertainment epicentre. Rooftop bars, live music venues, nightclubs, and strip of open-air bars make it unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia. The action runs from around 8pm until well past 3am.

Getting There

Patong is roughly 15km west of Phuket Town. Shared songthaews (red pick-up trucks) run from the market in Phuket Town for around 40 THB per person. A Grab taxi from the airport takes approximately 45–55 minutes depending on traffic.

Best Time to Visit

Peak season (November–April) delivers calm seas, reliable sunshine, and the most beach activity. The green season (May–October) can bring choppy conditions and occasional red flags, but the beach is significantly quieter and hotels are cheaper.
