Overview
Mai Khao is Phuket’s longest beach at 11km and also its most peaceful. Stretching from just south of Phuket Airport to the island’s northern tip, it sits largely within the Sirinath National Park — which protects it from overdevelopment and keeps it wild.
There are no beach vendors, no jet skis, and almost no other people. A handful of luxury resorts (JW Marriott, Anantara, Sala Phuket) sit behind the tree line but have minimal footprint on the sand itself.
Sea Turtles
Mai Khao is one of Thailand’s most important sea turtle nesting sites. Between November and February, Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles come ashore to lay eggs. The beach is patrolled during nesting season and a small turtle sanctuary in the area releases hatchlings each year. This is one of the few places in Thailand where you can witness this.
Swimming
The waves at Mai Khao are stronger than at southern beaches and there are no lifeguards. Swimming is possible during the high season but requires caution — check conditions before entering the water. The beach is better suited for long walks than swimming.
Getting There
Mai Khao is about 10 minutes south of Phuket International Airport. From Phuket Town, take the road north through Thalang — approximately 45 minutes. It’s easiest to reach by rental car or scooter. Tuk-tuks are scarce this far north.
Best Time to Visit
November to April for the calmest conditions and turtle nesting season. The beach is beautiful year-round but the sea can be rough in the monsoon months.
