Overview
Kata Beach sits 17km south of Patong and offers everything that made Phuket famous — beautiful water, soft sand, good restaurants — without the intensity. It’s a favourite among families, couples, and long-stay travellers who want a proper beach without the Patong circus.
The bay is a perfect crescent, framed by a green headland to the south and the Katathani resort to the north. The village behind the beach has a lively but approachable strip of restaurants, bars, dive shops, and convenience stores.
Swimming & Water Activities
The water at Kata is warm and clean. During the high season it’s excellent for swimming — notably calmer than Patong and with better visibility for snorkeling near the rocky southern headland.
When the monsoon swell arrives (May–October), Kata gets a rideable wave — small and forgiving, making it Phuket’s best beginner surf beach. Several surf schools operate from the beach with boards for hire.
Snorkeling
The rocky outcrop at the southern end of the beach is home to reef fish and occasional sea turtles. For better snorkeling, join a day trip to nearby Koh Pu (Crab Island) — an easy boat ride from the beach.
Getting There
From Phuket Town, songthaews run to Kata for around 40–50 THB (45 minutes). From Patong, the scenic coastal road takes about 20 minutes by scooter or Grab.
Best Time to Visit
November to April is peak season — calm, clear, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. May to October brings surf but also choppy days. Green season discounts make this a great budget travel period.
