Overview
Karon is Phuket’s third-largest beach and arguably one of its most underrated. Stretching nearly 3km between the headlands, it’s wide, white, and significantly less crowded than either Patong or Kata despite being just 5 minutes from each. The sand here is notably fine and squeaks underfoot when you walk — a quirk locals are proud of.
The town behind the beach has hotels, restaurants, and shops without feeling overrun. Karon Viewpoint, above the southern headland, is one of the most photographed spots on the island — overlooking three bays simultaneously.
Swimming
The sea at Karon can have a stronger current than at Kata or Patong, and the beach shelves steeply in places. Lifeguards are present in season. The water is generally good for swimming during the high season.
Karon Viewpoint
Just south of Karon, the hill road climbs to a viewpoint overlooking Karon, Kata, and Kata Noi beaches simultaneously. It’s one of Phuket’s most iconic photo spots and worth timing for sunset.
Getting There
Karon is about 20 minutes south of Patong and 5 minutes north of Kata by road. Songthaews run between Karon and Phuket Town (30–40 THB, 40 minutes). Grab is the easiest option.

What is near Karon Beach?
