Overview
Kamala is one of Phuket’s most liveable beach towns — popular with expats and long-stay travellers who appreciate its combination of a genuinely good beach, a functional local village, and proximity to both Patong (10 minutes south) and Surin (5 minutes north) without the noise of either.
The beach itself is about 2km long, sandy, and generally quiet even in peak season. Behind it, Kamala village has the practical amenities — supermarkets, clinics, banks, yoga studios — that make it viable for longer stays.
Swimming
Kamala’s bay is well-sheltered and the water is safe for swimming in the high season. The southern end near the fishing village area is slightly calmer than the northern section.
Phuket FantaSea
Just north of Kamala village, Phuket FantaSea is a large-scale Thai cultural theme park with nightly shows, elephant performances (currently under review by animal welfare organisations), and a 3,000-person buffet restaurant. It’s one of Phuket’s most visited evening attractions.
Getting There
Kamala is about 10 minutes north of Patong on the coastal road. Grab taxis are plentiful. A Grab from Phuket Town takes about 35 minutes.
