Overview
Cape Panwa is Phuket’s best east coast beach — a sheltered, palm-lined bay that faces Chalong Bay and the distant limestone islands of Phang Nga. Because it’s on the sheltered eastern side of the island, it’s calm year-round, even during the monsoon months when west-coast beaches are rough.
The beach has a quiet, unhurried character — fewer tourists, a handful of good hotels including the elegant Cape Panwa Hotel, and a genuine escape from the Patong crowds. The headland itself has an aquarium, a viewpoint, and the ferry pier for transfers to Koh Lone.
Swimming
Year-round calm water makes Cape Panwa one of the safest swimming beaches in Phuket. The east coast doesn’t get the Andaman swell, so conditions are consistent and gentle.
Sea Views
The views from Cape Panwa are unlike anything on the west coast — instead of the open Andaman, you look across a bay dotted with islands, fishing boats, and the occasional cruise ship. Sunset here colours the sky pink over the silhouetted islands.
Getting There
Cape Panwa is about 20 minutes south of Phuket Town on the southeast coast. Grab is the most reliable option; there’s limited local songthaew service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Cape Panwa Beach good in the rainy season?
Its east-coast location shelters it from the Andaman monsoon swell. When west-coast beaches are rough and red-flagged, Cape Panwa often remains perfectly calm.
Is there an aquarium near Cape Panwa?
Yes — the Phuket Aquarium is at the very tip of Cape Panwa and is a good family activity alongside a beach visit.
How far is Cape Panwa from Patong?
About 45–50 minutes by car. It’s on the opposite side of the island, so it’s usually a destination rather than a day trip from Patong.
Can I take a ferry from Cape Panwa?
Yes — ferries to Koh Lone (a quiet island with good snorkeling) depart from Cape Panwa pier.
