About Thalang
Thalang is Phuket’s historical heartland — the district in the centre-north of the island that was the island’s capital before Phuket Town developed during the tin-mining era. It’s not a beach destination, but for travellers interested in Phuket’s history, culture, and natural interior, it’s essential.
The landscape is a mixture of rubber and palm oil plantations, small Thai villages, and forested hills — very different from the coastal resort areas and a reminder that Phuket is a real island with a real interior, not just a collection of beaches.
Heroines Monument
The most visited landmark in Thalang is the Heroines Monument — a statue commemorating Chan and Mook, the widow and sister-in-law of the Governor of Phuket who in 1785 led the defence of the island against a Burmese fleet over 30 days. The monument sits at the main junction on the road north and is the island’s most important historical site.
Wat Phra Thong
Wat Phra Thong (Temple of the Golden Buddha) houses one of Thailand’s most unusual Buddhist images — a Buddha figure buried up to its chest, with only the golden head and shoulders visible above ground. Legend holds that anyone who tries to excavate the statue meets with misfortune. The temple is one of Phuket’s most revered.
Thalang National Museum
The small but well-curated Thalang National Museum documents the history of Phuket from prehistoric times through the tin-mining era, the Burmese invasions, and into the modern period. An excellent introduction to the island’s history before or after visiting the monuments.
Getting There
Thalang is on the main north-south highway (Route 402), about 15 minutes north of Phuket Town. Grab taxis serve the area. Most visitors combine it with a trip to the northern beaches or airport.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Thalang worth visiting?
Yes — if you have more than a few days on the island and want context beyond the beach. The Heroines Monument, Wat Phra Thong, and the national museum can be covered in a half-day.
How do I get to Thalang from Patong?
About 30–35 minutes by Grab. Combine it with a visit to the northern beaches for an efficient full day.
What is the significance of the Heroines Monument?
Chan and Mook organized the defence of Phuket after the governor died during a Burmese siege in 1785. They dressed women as soldiers to make the garrison appear larger and successfully repelled the invasion after 30 days. They are venerated throughout Phuket.
