About Surin & Bang Tao
The stretch of Phuket’s northwest coast from Surin to Bang Tao represents the island at its most sophisticated. Two of Thailand’s finest beaches, five international luxury resort hotels, multiple chic beach clubs, and an area that consistently attracts high-spending travellers from around the world.
Despite the high-end reputation, the area is not exclusively upscale. Local villages like Surin village and the Cherng Talay market offer authentic Thai life within walking distance of the luxury resorts.
Surin Beach
Surin Beach is the jewel — a 700m crescent of powdery white sand with unusually clear, calm water. It’s framed by green headlands and backed by hillside that remains largely undeveloped. The beach clubs here — particularly Catch Beach Club — are among the best in Southeast Asia. The adjacent village has excellent restaurants and a well-regarded morning market.
Bang Tao Beach
Bang Tao stretches 8km to the north — the domain of the Laguna Phuket resort complex in the south (five hotels: Angsana, Banyan Tree, Cassia, Dusit Thani, Outrigger) and a long, quiet, almost empty northern section backed by local villages. The contrast is striking — world-class resort on one end, wild beach on the other.
Getting There
The area is about 25–30 minutes north of Patong by Grab. Songthaews run between the Laguna complex and Phuket Town but infrequently. The most practical approach is Grab for single trips or renting a scooter for the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Surin Beach or Bang Tao Beach better?
Surin has better water and a more intimate beach feel. Bang Tao has more space and variety — from luxury resort to empty wild beach. Both are excellent; the choice depends on what you want.
Can non-hotel guests use the Laguna Phuket beach?
The beach is public. The Laguna resorts’ sun lounger areas are reserved for guests, but the wider Bang Tao Beach is open to all.
What is the best beach club in the Surin/Bang Tao area?
Catch Beach Club at Surin and HQ Beach Lounge at Bang Tao are consistently rated the best. Both have sun loungers, pools, food, and DJs. Minimum spend applies for sun beds during peak months.
How far is this area from Phuket Airport?
About 20–25 minutes by car — one of the closer beach areas to the airport, making it a convenient choice for late arrivals or early departures.
