Rawai

Phuket's most authentic local area — a sea gypsy fishing village, the island's best seafood, and a large expat community in the quiet south.

About Rawai

Rawai is Phuket’s most genuinely local neighbourhood — the area where expats live for years and where Thai residents from other parts of the island come specifically to eat. It’s not a beach resort in the conventional sense (Rawai Beach itself is not for swimming) but rather a working fishing village that has evolved into one of the island’s most interesting communities.

The long beachfront road is lined with seafood restaurants and market stalls. Behind it, Rawai town has yoga studios, wellness centres, international schools, expat bars, and the kind of neighbourhood infrastructure that only develops when people actually live somewhere rather than just passing through.

Seafood

The Rawai seafood strip is legendary — a row of open-air restaurants where you choose your fish, crab, prawns, and shellfish live from ice beds and have them cooked to your specification. It’s the freshest seafood on the island and significantly cheaper than the tourist beach restaurants elsewhere. Arrive before 7pm for the best selection.

Nai Harn & Phromthep

Rawai is the gateway to Phuket’s beautiful southern tip. Nai Harn Beach (10 minutes north) is one of Phuket’s finest beaches. Phromthep Cape (15 minutes south) is the island’s most famous sunset viewpoint. Ya Nui Beach (between the two) has the best shore-accessible snorkeling. A half-day circuit of all three from Rawai is one of Phuket’s best self-guided trips.

Getting There

Rawai is in the south of the island, about 40 minutes from Patong by Grab. From Phuket Town, 30 minutes. There are limited songthaew services from Phuket Town.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you swim at Rawai Beach?

No — the beach is shallow, rocky at low tide, and the sea floor is not suitable for swimming. Nai Harn Beach (10 minutes north) is the nearest good swimming beach.

What is the best seafood restaurant in Rawai?

All the restaurants along the seafood strip offer broadly similar quality — fresh, well-priced, and cooked to order. Locals favour the busiest ones, which usually indicates the freshest stock.

Is Rawai a good base for exploring Phuket?

It’s an excellent base for the south of the island — Nai Harn, Phromthep, Ya Nui, and Chalong are all within 15 minutes. It’s further from Patong and Old Town but worth the trade-off in atmosphere and authenticity.

Is Rawai expensive?

No — it’s one of the most affordable areas in Phuket for food, accommodation, and daily life. Local restaurants serve excellent Thai food for 60–120 THB.
