About Patong

Patong is Phuket’s most visited and most talked-about destination — a town that generates both devotion and strong opinions. It’s loud, commercial, and never sleeps. It’s also exceptionally convenient, genuinely fun for the right traveller, and home to the island’s most famous beach.

The town sprawls across a valley behind the bay, with most activity concentrated along three parallel roads: beachfront Thaweewong Road, the entertainment strip of Bangla Road, and inland Rat Uthit Road. Everything you need for a classic Phuket holiday is within a 15-minute walk.

Where to Eat

Patong has a wide spectrum from tourist-trap seafood restaurants charging triple the fair price to excellent local Thai food hidden on the side streets. For the best value, avoid the beachfront restaurants and walk one block back — small shophouse restaurants on Bangla Road’s side streets serve good pad see ew, massaman curry, and khao man gai for under 100 THB.

For a splurge, the rooftop restaurants above Bangla Road offer decent food with views worth paying for.

Shopping

Jungceylon is Patong’s main mall — a large complex with international brands, a Big C supermarket, a food court, and a cinema. The Bangla Road night market runs parallel to the entertainment strip with souvenirs, clothing, and street food. Banzaan Fresh Market near the beach is the best place for fresh produce and local snacks.

Nightlife

Bangla Road is the centrepiece — a pedestrianised entertainment strip that runs from the beach inland, lined with open-air bars, nightclubs, live music venues, and show bars. Tiger Complex, Illuzion, and Seduction are among the most popular clubs. Rooftop bars like Nicky’s Handlebar offer music with views.

The action starts around 9pm and winds down around 3–4am.

Getting There & Around

Songthaews (shared pick-up trucks) run between Patong and Phuket Town every 30 minutes for 40 THB. Tuk-tuks are everywhere but overpriced — negotiate firmly or use Grab. From the airport, allow 45–55 minutes by car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Patong safe for tourists?

Generally yes. The main tourist areas are well-policed and petty crime is manageable with standard precautions. The biggest risks are jet ski scams on the beach and tuk-tuk overcharging — use Grab and negotiate all prices before committing.

Is Patong good for families?

Yes — with caveats. The beach and day activities are excellent for families. The nightlife area (Bangla Road) is easy to avoid entirely. Many family-friendly hotels are in the quieter northern and southern parts of town.

What is the best area to stay in Patong?

For beach access and quiet nights: the streets behind the northern beach section. For central convenience: around Rat Uthit Road. For nightlife proximity: near Bangla Road. Avoid the streets immediately adjacent to Bangla Road if you need early sleep.

When is the best time to visit Patong?

November to April for beach weather. Patong is a year-round destination, but the rainy season (May–October) brings rougher seas and occasional heavy rain — though the beach is still accessible on many days.

How far is Patong from Phuket Airport?

About 45–55 minutes depending on traffic. Grab taxis cost approximately 450–600 THB. The airport bus runs to Phuket Town, from where a songthaew can take you to Patong.
