About Kata

Kata is many people’s favourite base in Phuket — it has the beach quality of a premium resort destination with the atmosphere of an actual town. Unlike Patong, Kata feels human-scaled and genuinely pleasant to wander around. Unlike Karon, it has enough going on to keep you entertained for a week or more.

The town occupies a valley behind Kata Beach, with the main commercial street running parallel to the sand. It’s compact, walkable, and well-served with restaurants, dive shops, minimarkets, pharmacies, and yoga studios.

The Beaches

Kata has two beaches: Kata Beach (the main bay, about 1.5km long) and Kata Noi (a smaller, quieter cove just south). Both are excellent for swimming in the high season and Kata Beach gets a surf break from May to October that attracts beginners and intermediate surfers.

Dining

Kata has some of the best value dining in Phuket — a mix of excellent Thai restaurants, seafood spots, and international options at prices significantly below Patong. The street behind the beach has the highest concentration of restaurants. For local food, the small market area near the roundabout at the north end of town serves authentic Thai dishes from 60–100 THB.

Nightlife

Kata has a calm bar scene — a handful of beach bars, rooftop spots, and live music venues, but nothing resembling Patong’s Bangla Road. It’s perfect for a couple of evening drinks without committing to a late night.

Getting There

Songthaews run between Kata and Phuket Town (40–50 THB, about 45 minutes). From Patong, it’s 20 minutes by Grab or scooter on the coastal road. Many hotels offer free shuttles to Patong if you want a big night out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kata better than Patong for a family holiday?

For most families, yes. Kata has excellent beaches, a much quieter atmosphere, and good facilities — without the noise and adult entertainment of Patong. Patong is 20 minutes away if you want to visit.

Is there nightlife in Kata?

A small bar scene — beach bars, a few live music venues, and some late-night spots — but nothing like Patong. Most visitors find this an asset, not a drawback.

Can I surf at Kata?

Yes — during the green season (May–October) Kata Beach gets a consistent beginners’ wave. Multiple surf schools operate on the beach with lessons and board rental.

How far is Kata from Phuket Airport?

About 50–60 minutes by car. Most visitors find Kata worth the slightly longer transfer compared to staying in Patong.
