About Chalong
Chalong is Phuket’s operational heart — less glamorous than the beach resorts but essential to how the island actually functions. It’s where dive boats depart for the Similan Islands and Racha Islands, where long-tail boat captains run their fishing operations, and where the largest temple on the island draws thousands of Thai Buddhist pilgrims every year.
The main strip along Chalong Bay Road has dive shops, boat charter offices, marine supply stores, and a growing number of good restaurants. Behind it, Chalong village has local markets, schools, and a dense Thai residential community.
Wat Chalong
Wat Chalong is Phuket’s most revered temple — a large complex of gilded chedis, ornate shrines, and Buddha images that receives thousands of visitors daily. The main building contains a bone fragment believed to be from the Buddha and is housed in a spectacular multi-tiered structure. Entry is free; dress conservatively (shoulders and knees covered).
Diving Hub
Chalong Pier is the departure point for most of Phuket’s dive operations — day trips to Racha Yai, Racha Noi, the Phi Phi Islands, and multi-day liveaboards to the Similan and Surin Islands. If you’re serious about diving in Phuket, Chalong is where you’ll spend your mornings.
Getting There
Chalong is centrally located in southern Phuket — about 20 minutes from Phuket Town and 35 minutes from Patong. Grab is the most reliable transport option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chalong Bay good for swimming?
No — the bay is used primarily for boating and is too shallow and silty for swimming. The nearest good swimming beaches are Rawai (10 minutes) and Nai Harn (15 minutes).
How do I book a dive trip from Chalong?
Walk the dive shop strip on Chalong Bay Road and compare prices and destinations. Alternatively, book through your hotel or online. Most reputable shops offer PADI certification courses as well as guided day dives.
Is Wat Chalong worth visiting?
Yes — it’s one of Phuket’s most impressive and spiritually significant sites, and entry is free. Combine it with a Chalong pier visit for a good half-day from any beach base.
How far is the Similan Islands from Chalong?
The Similan Islands are about 100km northwest of Phuket — roughly 3 hours by speedboat. Most trips are liveaboards (2–3 nights) departing from Chalong or day trips departing very early morning.
