About Cape Panwa

Cape Panwa occupies the southeastern tip of Phuket — a quiet, forested headland that juts into the waters between Chalong Bay and the eastern coastline. It’s one of Phuket’s most peaceful corners: calm sea year-round, dramatic views across the bay, and none of the resort-town density of the west coast.

The cape is primarily a destination for those staying at one of the handful of elegant hotels here (the Cape Panwa Hotel is the most famous) or visiting the Phuket Aquarium. It makes an excellent escape from the west-coast crowds, particularly during the monsoon season when the east coast remains calm.

Year-Round Calm

Cape Panwa’s eastern location gives it a crucial advantage over the west coast — the monsoon swell that affects Patong, Kata, and the other beaches from May to October doesn’t reach here. The sea is calm, swimmable, and often completely undisturbed even during the rainy season.

Phuket Aquarium

At the very tip of the cape, the Phuket Aquarium is one of Thailand’s better marine exhibits — a good 2-hour visit for families with children, featuring touch pools, reef fish displays, and a short underwater tunnel. Admission is modest.

Koh Lone

A ferry from the Cape Panwa pier connects to Koh Lone (Coral Island) — a small island with excellent snorkeling and a beach resort that makes for a relaxing day trip.

Getting There

Cape Panwa is about 20 minutes south of Phuket Town. Grab is the most reliable option; songthaews don’t serve the cape directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cape Panwa good during rainy season?

Yes — it’s one of the best Phuket destinations during the monsoon (May–October) because its eastern location keeps it sheltered from Andaman swell. Swimming is possible year-round.

Is Cape Panwa far from Patong?

About 45–50 minutes by car — it’s on the opposite side of the island. Most visitors to Cape Panwa are staying in the area or making a specific day trip.

How do I get to Koh Lone from Cape Panwa?

Ferries run from the Cape Panwa pier. Schedules vary seasonally — check with the pier office or your hotel for current times.
