Surf Lessons in Phuket
Learn to surf at Kata Beach — Phuket's best surf spot with consistent waves and beginner-friendly schools.
Phuket isn’t a world-class surf destination, but it has consistent, rideable waves from May through October — the opposite season from the diving and snorkeling calendar. Kata Beach is the best surf beach on the island: a wide bay with reliable beach breaks, several established surf schools, and lifeguards on duty.
If you’ve never surfed before, Kata in the wet season is an ideal place to start.
Best Time To Surf
The surf season runs May through October when southwest monsoon swells roll into Kata Bay. Waves range from 0.5m (perfect for beginners) to 2m+ when the swell is up. November–April the sea is flat — no surfing, but perfect for snorkeling and diving.
| Month | Wave Size | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| May–June | 0.5–1.5m | Building, clean mornings |
| July–August | 1–2m | Most consistent |
| September–October | 0.5–1.5m | Dropping, still surfable |
| November–April | Flat | Dive and snorkel season |
Kata Beach Surf Schools
Multiple schools operate directly on Kata Beach. A typical 2-hour lesson includes:
- 30 minutes of dry-land instruction (paddling, pop-up technique, stance)
- 90 minutes in the water with an instructor in the break
- Soft-top longboard (ideal for learning)
- Rash vest and board shorts provided
Most first-timers stand up within the first 30–45 minutes.

- Try Kalim Beach (just north of Patong) for faster, more powerful waves when the swell is up
Tips
- Go in the morning — waves are typically cleaner before the afternoon onshore wind.
- Kata Noi (the smaller beach south of Kata) often has better-quality waves with fewer crowds.
- Sun protection is critical — you’re on reflective water for 2 hours. Rash vest, reef-safe SPF.
- Book a private lesson (not group) if you want faster progression.

FAQ
Is surfing safe for complete beginners? Yes at Kata in small to moderate conditions. The soft-top boards used in lessons are much safer than hard shortboards. Instructors stay close in the water. As with any ocean activity, always check current conditions.
Can kids take lessons? Yes — most schools accept children from 8 years old. The soft-top longboards are very stable, and the instructors are experienced with younger students.
Is there surf during the high season (December–February)? Very rarely. The northeast monsoon brings calm conditions perfect for diving and snorkeling, but the southwest-facing beaches like Kata are flat. If surfing is your main reason for visiting, come between June and September.
