Snorkeling in Phuket
The best snorkeling spots around Phuket — reefs, turtles, and crystal-clear Andaman water.
Phuket’s surrounding waters have some excellent snorkeling — both on half-day boat trips and as part of island day tours. The Andaman Sea around Phuket offers relatively calm, warm water from November through April, with visibility ranging from 5 to 20 metres depending on the spot and season.
You don’t need to be a strong swimmer. Most snorkel tours provide life vests, and the guides stay in the water with the group.
Best Snorkeling Spots
Racha Islands (Ko Racha Yai & Noi)
The best snorkeling within an hour of Phuket. Coral gardens with turtles, leopard sharks, and dense reef fish. Water visibility averages 10–20m in peak season. Racha Yai is more accessible; Racha Noi is deeper with stronger currents but more impressive marine life.
Coral Island (Ko Hae)
Only 20 minutes from Chalong Pier — the easiest and most popular option. Coral gardens are not the most pristine (heavy boat traffic), but it’s a reliable half-day trip with calm water, white sand, and kayak rentals included.
Phi Phi Islands
If you’re doing the Phi Phi day trip, most tours include 2–3 snorkel stops along the way. Shark Point and Anemone Reef have excellent coral coverage and reliable reef shark sightings.
Shark Point (Hin Musang)
One of the best snorkel sites near Phuket — a submerged pinnacle with leopard sharks resting on the bottom, sea turtles, and dense schooling fish. Usually included on speedboat tours to the Phi Phi Islands.

Tips
- Racha Islands are consistently better than Coral Island for reef quality — worth the slightly longer boat ride.
- Bring your own snorkel mask if you can — the masks on budget tours often don’t seal well.
- Morning departures (before 9am) have calmer water and fewer boats at the reefs.
- Applying reef-safe sunscreen (not regular SPF spray) protects coral and is required at national park sites.
- Don’t stand on coral — it takes years to grow back.

FAQ
What’s the difference between a half-day and full-day snorkel trip? Half-day trips (~600–900 THB) usually visit one spot — Coral Island or one stop near Racha. Full-day trips (~1,500–2,500 THB) visit Racha Yai and Racha Noi or combine multiple reefs with lunch on the island.
Can I snorkel without a tour — directly from the beach? A few beaches have accessible reef: Nai Harn Bay (rocky points at each end), and around the headlands at Kata Noi. But the best reefs require a boat.
Is the snorkeling still good in May? May marks the start of monsoon season. Visibility drops, rain is common, and some boats stop running. Phi Phi and Racha Islands tours are more weather-dependent. Phang Nga Bay (sheltered) is a better choice in the shoulder season.
