Phuket Old Town Walking Tour
Explore the Sino-Portuguese shophouses, hidden shrines, and street food scene of Phuket's most atmospheric neighbourhood.
Phuket Old Town is one of the most underrated urban neighbourhoods in Southeast Asia. While most visitors head straight for the beaches, the Old Town rewards slower exploration: ornate Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in powdery pastels, Chinese shrines tucked into alleyways, century-old coffee shops, and a street food scene that locals consider the best on the island.
The town grew wealthy in the 18th and 19th centuries from tin mining, and the architecture reflects that history — a collision of Chinese, Portuguese, and Malay influences that you won’t find anywhere else in Thailand.
What To See
Thalang Road
The most photogenic street in the Old Town — a long row of pastel shophouses with ornate columns, some restored, some beautifully decrepit. Good cafés and shops occupy the ground floors.
Dibuk Road
More locals, fewer tourists. Some of the best Hokkien coffee shops in the city, old Chinese medicine halls, and the famous Dibuk Restaurant.
Wat Mongkol Nimit
An active Thai temple two minutes from the main shopping street — its contrast with the Chinese architecture around it tells the story of Phuket’s cultural mixing.
The Blue Elephant
The Old Town’s grandest building, a 1903 colonial mansion now housing one of Phuket’s best Thai restaurants and a cooking school. Even if you don’t eat, it’s worth seeing the building.
Old Town Shrines
Several Chinese Taoist shrines operate in the area. The most important is Jui Tui Shrine, a red-and-gold temple that is the centre of the Vegetarian Festival held every October.
Sunday Walking Street
Every Sunday evening (5pm–10pm), Thalang Road closes to traffic for the Walking Street market. This is one of the best street food markets in southern Thailand — Thai sausages, lok chup (mung bean sweets shaped like tiny fruit), oyster omelettes, and live music from street performers. Arrive early for the best selection.

- Stop at one of the Old Town’s Hokkien coffee shops for kopi (coffee filtered through a cloth sock) and kaya toast. Raya Restaurant and Coffee Lab are both worth the stop.
- Wear comfortable shoes — the pavements are uneven.
- The Old Town is mostly free to explore independently, but a guided walking tour adds context to the architecture and history.

FAQ
Is the Old Town walkable from the main beach areas? No — it’s about 14km from Patong and 10km from Kata. Budget 300–400 THB each way by Grab or songthaew.
What is the Vegetarian Festival? A nine-day Taoist festival held in October each year. Devotees follow a strict vegetarian diet, and the streets fill with extraordinary rituals. One of the most spectacular festivals in Southeast Asia. Dates change annually (based on the Chinese lunar calendar).
Are there good restaurants in the Old Town? Yes — some of the best food in Phuket is here. Look for: Blue Elephant (upscale Thai), Dibuk Restaurant (old-school Thai in a heritage shophouse), Ka Jok See (dinner party restaurant, book ahead), and the street noodle vendors on Thalang Road.
